Disrurbed by Nigeria’s core values being eroded by the day, the National Orientation Agency is organizing a training for National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) Desk Officers on NOA-Community Development Service (CDS). The event is being put together by the Agency in collaboration with an NGO, Generation for Societal Change with a view to using youth corps members to revitalize national core values of our great nation which are threatened by social menaces and emerging social behaviors. NOA has over time been at the fore front of promoting our cherished national core values which used to define us as a nation.
Dignity of labour, integrity, patriotism, social justice are some of the core values of Nigeria. Community Development Service (CDS) is an initiative of the NYSC which gives responsibility to youth corps members about sense of community development in their respective areas of deployment across the country. NOA and NYSC are working to create a CDS that will be targeted at promoting the nation’s core values to tackle identified social menaces such as thuggery, rape, gender-based violence, exams malpractices, drug addiction, and other vices.
In her welcome address, the Director, Political Civic, Ethics and Values (PCEV), Mrs. Ngozi Ekeocha thanked the participants while assuring them that the new NOA-CDS would provide another platform for enthronement of Nigeria’s core values which will be essential as it will be driven by the youth. Representative of the Director-General of the NYSC, Priscilla Akhimena, disclosed that the DG NYSC has given an approval for the establishment of NOA-CDS with will herald new outfit to tackle social vices while serving the fatherland.
NOA retired Director/Resource person, Mr. Musa Chantu took the participants through his paper titled: “Understanding the Background to the Establishment of the NOA-CDS”. Second resource person/representative of Generation for Societal Change (GSC), Dr. Abraham Mogase listed role of NOA-CDS to include regular visit to primary and secondary schools to advocate for national core values in addition to decorating students ambassadors for the cause for which they promote.
