In continuation of Peace and Security sensitization across the state, at exactly 4.00pm the management of National Orientation Agency (NOA) Lagos Directorate, led by the State Director, Mr. Waheed Ishola paid a sensitization campaign to the Chairman, Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) Lagos State Chapter, The Rt. Rev. (Dr.) Stephen T.V. Adegbite, Bishop of Ikeja Diocese at the Association’s office in Ogba, Ikeja Lagos on Thursday the 23rd of December, 2021 to brief him on what is expected of them as Religious Leaders in building a people of peace and security within their locality.

Addressing the CAN Chairman on “The Role of Religious Leaders in Peace Building”, the director, National Orientation Agency (NOA), Lagos Directorate, Mr. Waheed Ishola, observed that, over the years, the country had experienced several religious crises that had affected the social economic activities of the people and Since no country can develop meaningfully in an atmosphere of crisis or breakdown of law and order, an environment of peace is needed for nation’s development.

He noted that Religion, in whatever form, whether Christianity, Muslim or Traditional faith are all concerned with human conduct; meant to mould human behaviour for good, tolerance, self-control, harmonious relationships of love, forgiveness and compassion instead of divisive tendencies of hostile feelings and negative thoughts to each other. He urged the CAN Chairman to appeal to members of the association to keep to the tenets of their faith by preaching peace and love to their followers and believers which undoubtedly encouraged peaceful co-existence, good neighbourliness and harmonious living so as to bring about the desired peaceful society.

In his response, the CAN chairman, Rt. Rev. (Dr.) Adegbite commended the Agency for the bold steps taken in sensitizing the people on the need to embrace peace and preach peace. He said that both him and the Grand Chief Imam of Lagos had already agreed on the need to continuously admonish their members to preach peace to their followers and believers. He called on the government at all levels to be alive with their responsibilities especially now that we are celebrating Christmas, Christ, which is the best gift to the world. Hence, there should be more peace. The Chairman promised to support the Agency in the sensitization and promotion of peace within his association of Christ believers.

High point of the visit was the presentation of the Nigerian National Flag which was donated by Access Bank Plc to the CAN Chairman by the NOA Director. The Director, Mr. Waheed Ishola used the occasion to explain that the flag (Green White Green) symbolizes peace and unity which the government expects Religious Leaders to constantly preach to their people, believers and followers alike. Ms. Zandra Eguavon, Assistant Director, National Orientation Agency, gave a vote of thanks to the CAN Chairman for making out time from his busy schedule to host the Agency.
