Nigerian youths have been admonished to enlist massively in the campaign to mitigate the effects of climate change, describing them as key to success in the quest for a sustainable environment, given their vast youthful energies.

The Director General, National Orientation Agency (NOA), Garba Abari, represented by the Director of Special Duties, Mrs. Mette Edekobi, gave the admonition at a One-day Sensitization Workshop on Environmental Sustainability and Civic Education at the Government Secondary School (GSS), Nyanya, Abuja.

Abari emphasized the need for students to imbibe habits of cleanliness and responsibility in catering for their environment and to communicate same to each other in order to mutually reinforce environment friendly behaviours. Donating library materials to the school, Abari charged the students to read wide and imbibe the national core values of Discipline, Integrity, Dignity of Labour, Social Justice, Religious Tolerance, Self-reliance and Patriotism for a better society in line with the “Change Begins with Me” reorientation programme of government.

On her part, the Principal, GSS Nyanya, Mrs. Blessing Ezendu observed that the workshop was apt and timely considering the far reaching impacts of climate change, adding that everyone has a part to play in ensuring a sustainable environment.

Resource persons at the workshop stressed the need for the youth to take environmental sustainability awareness to their homes and neighborhoods in order to discourage greenhouse emissions, deforestation, use of non-biodegradable materials and other climate change inducing practices in the community.
